Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed NMU alumnus Scott Holman of Freeland to the NMU Board of Trustees. Holman replaces Steve Gulis, who resigned. He will serve the remainder of an eight-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2018, and his appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the state Senate.
“I’m pleased to be back on the board and looking forward to serving in that capacity again,” Holman said. “It’s an important time in the university’s history in that we’re selecting a new president. One of the most important roles the board takes on is the selection of a president. It’s a decision that lasts for years and can change how the university progresses. I’m excited to have a chance to be a part of that process.” Full Story
Cliffs Donates $250,000 to NMU’s Molecular Diagnostics Initiative
NMU’s clinical laboratory sciences programs will receive $250,000, disbursed over five years, from the Cliffs Natural Resources Foundation. The funding will expand the scope of the CLS molecular diagnostics laboratory in the West Science Building to facilitate student training, test development and research. It will also establish a $50,000 Cliffs Endowed Scholarship to assist CLS students with costs associated with training at clinical agencies, including Mayo Clinic. Other planned uses are to provide molecular training for the current laboratory workforce and high school educators, offer summer molecular workshops for elementary/secondary students, and facilitate interdisciplinary genetics-based research initiatives with NMU students. NMU Announces Preliminary Winter Enrollment
NMU released its 10th day winter 2014 semester enrollment report. The total headcount is 8,024, a decrease of 227 students—2.8 percent—from the same report for winter 2013. Most of that loss is due to declines that occurred at the start of the fall semester, when 219 fewer students enrolled compared with the previous year. Full Story
Students Responsive to Health Info
The second year of NMU’s subscription to the national Student Health 101 electronic magazine kicked off with a strong response. There were 2,200 site visits in September—nearly double the monthly average for the 2012-13 academic year. Though the figure has tapered off somewhat, the pace remains ahead of last year. The magazine continues to complement the outreach efforts of campus offices and departments, putting more students in touch with information designed to enhance their health and well-being, which may also positively impact their academic performance. Health Fair Tuesday
The free Wildcat Wellness Health Fair for employees and students will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the University Center Great Lakes Rooms. Employees are allotted one hour of release time to attend. The annual event includes healthy living information displays, take-home materials, demonstrations, health screenings and prizes. The NMU Health Promotion Society and the School of Health and Human Performance are sponsoring the event.
Reassigned Time Awarded
Ten NMU faculty members were selected for Reassigned Time Awards for the winter 2014 semester. They have received four credits of reassigned time to pursue scholarly research or creative projects. To see the recipients and their project titles, read the Full Story.

‘Wildcat Night’ Feb. 22 “Wildcat Night Across the Country” alumni parties are being held at various locations nationwide in conjunction with the NMU hockey game against U.P. rival Michigan Tech on Saturday, Feb. 22. Here in Marquette, the alumni associations from both schools will host a joint pre-game party from 5-7 p.m in Vandament Arena. Tickets are $10 per person and cover food, NMU spirit gear and a chance to win door prizes. A cash bar will be available. NMU alumni and friends also will receive a commemorative cup. The puck will drop for the game at 7:07 p.m. in the Berry Events Center. Pre-game party and game tickets can be purchased at any NMU Ticket outlet or by phone at ext. 1032.

It is an art to draft a well-crafted proposal that secures external funding for campus scholarship—no easy task with dwindling resources in a highly competitive arena. Still, the required documentation can be relatively straightforward, factual and sometimes formulaic. To liberate her writing from those constraints and continue to challenge herself, Franich also is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative nonfiction at NMU on top of her job. Full Story |
Erica Franich (Grants and Research) recognized in high school that writing was her strength. She successfully turned that skill into a career, but the format and purpose have evolved over the years from print journalism to public relations to her current role as director of grants and contracts.
