Ford Group V.P. Named

Commencement Speaker

The keynote speaker at NMU’s May 4 commencement will be Felicia Fields, a Ford group vice president who leads the global human resources and corporate services functions for Ford Motor Company. She also will receive an honorary Doctor of Business degree. Full Story

Roy Receives Honorary Degree

Michael Roy, retired NMU vice president and former interim president, will receive an honorary Doctor of Business degree at the May 4 commencement. Full Story

 

Program Established at Macomb

 

Northern has entered into a one-year formal agreement with Macomb Community College to offer a loss prevention management program at MCC’s main campus in Warren. At the February university forum, President David Haynes mentioned off-campus programs as one of the “small bites” that will help NMU achieve its new enrollment goal of 2 percent growth in each of the next three years.

“We need to determine how much we grow on and off campus,” Haynes said at the forum. “We are one of two universities that do not offer programs off campus. In today’s higher education market, that doesn’t work. We’ll be at Macomb Community College this fall and in Grand Rapids.” Full Story

 

Molecular Diagnostics Workshops Held

Clinical Sciences hosted a series of molecular diagnostics workshops for the first time on campus. Organizers hope to make it an annual event. More than 30 high school educators and clinical laboratory professionals from across the Upper Peninsula participated in Thursday's interactive sessions, which highlighted the basics of DNA, the history of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and the advances molecular techniques have made in clinical disease diagnosis. Sixteen NMU students majoring in clinical laboratory science attended a workshop this morning to get a hands-on introduction to molecular diagnostics and learn about career options in clinical laboratory medicine. Awards Presented at Employee Luncheon

The 2013 NMU Faculty and Staff Recognition Luncheon took place Tuesday, April 16. It honored faculty, staff and retirees for their years of service to NMU. Excellence-in-Service and Distinguished Team Awards were also presented. Full Story

 

 

Theater Class Performs Road Shows

NMU students are taking two shows on the road and performing them in U.P. schools as part of the university's first "theater for young audiences" class. They have visited schools in Marquette, Gwinn and Gladstone, and will travel to Sault Ste. Marie and Hermansville next week.

The performance for grades 3-8 is "Michigan History Follies" (students are pictured during a recent rehearsal). This original play tells the story of how Alex has one day to finish a Michigan history project. Before he can finish, his work is stolen by two time-traveling bandits. Alex goes back in time to catch them and encounters Native Americans, The Kellogg Brothers, Motown artists, Henry Ford and other Michigan historic figures. Full Story

 

Freshman Fellows Present Research at National Conference

NMU education students Danielle Schafer and Olivia Crawford presented a research project titled “The Relationship between Visual and Performing Arts and ACT Scores” at the annual National Conference of Undergraduate Research. Their project was selected from 3,500 submissions for this competitive conference, which was held April 11-13 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Schafer is from Crystal Lake, Ill., and Crawford is from Owosso, Mich. Both are recipients of the Presidential Scholars Award and are part of NMU’s Freshman Fellows research program. Full Story

 

'U.P. in Story' April 26

The Upper Peninsula has inspired songwriters, storytellers and authors ranging from Ernest Hemingway to Jim Harrison to Robert Traver (John Voelker). “The U.P. in Story,” a performance event dedicated to this written material, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Forest Roberts Theatre. It is sponsored by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU.

Performers from the community and university will read or sing works by the famous and not so famous. NMU employees scheduled  to participate include Leigh Barry, April Lindala, Dan Truckey, Nicole Walton and David Wood. The Beaumier Center will also use this event to present the 2013 Upper Peninsula Folklife Award to the late storyteller and historian, Fred Rydholm. 

                    

Gisele Duehring (Facilities) holds the distinction of being the first closeup subject who had to interrupt the interview to attend to a work-related matter that couldn’t wait.

She traveled to the Gries Hall parking lot, donned a hard hat and harness, then descended into the dark depths of a steam vault (glorified manhole, to non-engineering types). Duehring was called to inspect a new ladder that offers more toe room for enhanced safety and to check repairs to a rusted-out pipe support before the crew reinstalled the cover and closed it up again.
