Provost Paul Lang approved three Wildcat Innovation Fund proposals. Katy Morrison (Academic Career Advisement Center) was awarded $12,100 for her project "Academic Videos for the NMU Undeclared Programs and Student Outreach/Recruitment." Peter Goodrich (English) received $12,500 for "Bridge to NMU: Seminar for International Studies." Victor Holliday and Ansley Valentine (CAPS) were awarded $6,750 for the" Forest Roberts Theatre Young Audiences Tour."
Jessica Thompson (CAPS) has joined a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) project exploring the cost-effectiveness of restoring coastal marshlands to improve filtration and reduce polluted runoff in the Gulf of Mexico. Thompson will work with a team of ecologists and marine biologists at the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve System in Fairhope, Ala., and at the University of South Alabama’s Dauphine Island Sea Lab. As a collaborative process consultant, she will train the science and stakeholder teams to build interactive decision-making models through a process called mediated modeling. NMU is a sub-awardee of the total $330,000 funded by the NOAA project and will receive $13,086 per year for Thompson’s involvement in the collaboration. Experts from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and the University of Connecticut are also involved in the project.
Patricia Hogan (HPER) received the Outstanding Michigan College/University Teacher of the Year Award at the Michigan Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance annual meeting Nov. 16-17 in Traverse City. She is pictured with MAHPERD Executive Director Roger Jackson.
MAHPERD is a professional society designed to promote healthy, active living through professional development and advocacy. The outstanding college teacher award goes to a professor who teaches in physical education, health, recreation or athletics; teaches with an understanding of child growth and development; epitomizes personal health; and serves as a positive role model.
