An article by Carl Wozniak (Education) titled "Freshman Fellows: Recruiting and Retaining Great Students through Research Opportunities" has been published in the Council on Undergraduate Research Quarterly. Wozniak looked at NMU's Freshman Fellowship program, which was established in the mid-1980s to coordinate the placement of academically talented incoming freshman with university faculty willing to take them on as junior researchers. "The program has matured and evolved and now purports to aid in recruitment of talented high school seniors and help retain those students once they are on campus," he wrote. "This primarily quantitative study evaluated these claims through comparisons of program participants since 2006 with students who did not participate, but were otherwise qualified for the program. The study explored program value, retention, semesters needed to earn a degree and graduating GPA using university databases and online surveys of past, current and incoming Freshman Fellows. As a corollary, university admissions officers were surveyed regarding their perceptions of undergraduate research as a recruitment tool. Findings demonstrate the Freshman Fellowship program has a limited positive effect as a recruitment tool and a considerable positive effect on retention."
Johnathan Lawrence, Robert Winn (Biology) and undergraduate student Nicholas Cook joined fellow Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center representative Dr. Richard Rovin in co-authoring "Leptin Promotes Glioblastoma." The article is published in Neurology Research International and available online. Originally known for its role in satiety and weight loss, the hormone leptin more recently has been shown to augment tumor growth in a variety of cancers.
Patricia Hogan, Mary Jane Tremethick, Chris Kirk (HPER) and Mike Burgmeier (AIS-Library) published an interdisciplinary article titled "Promoting Ethical Reasoning in Health Professionals" in the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance journal. The paper presented a theoretical basis for ethical reasoning and proposed problem-based learning as a means to promote the development of ethical reasoning skills in health professionals..
