Hope Starts Here Challenge
In honor of Brain Tumor Awareness Month, the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center is hosting the Hope Starts Here Challenge to raise proceeds for advocacy, education and reserach programs at the center. Last year the event attracted over 600 participants. There are five events, with something for everyone.
The first event, a competitive half marathon, begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, at Lakeview Arena. The course runs around Presque Isle Park, south along Lake Superior, to the Carp River and back. Pre-registration for the half marathon is $65. Day-of registration is $75.
The competitive duathlon begins at 9 a.m. with a 5K run, 10-mile mountain bike ride and 5K run. Pre-registration for the event is $65 for an individual or $55 per member for teams of two to three. Day-of registration is $75 for an individual or $65 per member for teams of two to three.
The competitive 10K starts at 10 a.m. The route goes around Presque Isle Park. Pre-registration is $35. Day-of registration is $40.
The competitive 5K is at 10:15 a.m., along Lake Superior to the ore dock near Presque Isle Park and back. Pre-registration is $35. Day-of registration is $40.
There will also be a non-competitve leisure walk and short bike ride beginning at 10:30 a.m. The route travels South along Lake Superior and back. Pre-registration is $35. Day-of registration is $40.
Paid registration includes a T-shirt, bib, lunch and timing chip. Awards for each event go to the top finishers overall, as well as in each age division. Lunch and the awards ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Lakeview Arena.
New this year is the pre-event expo from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Marquette General Hospital North lobby. Pre-registered participants may pick up their T-shirt, bib and lunch ticket at the expo.

*All cyclists must wear a bike helmet; those under 18-years-old are required to have parental permission.
*Children under 5-years-old are free to register and $15 to purchase a T-shirt and food ticket.
*Individual lunches may be purchased separate for $5.
The Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center is a cooperative effort between Northern Michigan University and Marquette General Health System - a Duke LifePoint Hospital.
