We present research findings from Calculus I courses taught during winter 2012 (traditional grading) and fall 2012 (mastery learning grading) to test three hypotheses. Under conditions of mastery learning, students should achieve more learning of higher-level mathematical concepts, learn higher-level mathematical concepts more quickly, and evaluate mastery learning favorably. We conclude with a few general observations and a summary of student comments about the mastery learning approach in Calculus I.
