Dr. Matthew N. Songer, M.D., President and Board Chair, Frontier Medical Devices

Dr.Matthew N. Songer, M.D. uniquely combines his passion for healthcare, entrepreneurial business and active lifestyles.  He is an orthopaedic and spine surgeon with Orthopaedic Surgery Associates of Marquette, PC and is on staff at Marquette General Hospital.  He is an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Technological University and also an adjunct professor in the College of Business at Northern Michigan University.  Dr. Songer has been involved with the teaching program at Michigan State's College of Human Medicine where he has served as an associate clinical professor since 1998.  He is also president and chairman of the board of Frontier Medical Devices, founded in 2010 as a medical device research, development and manufacturing company.  To advance research in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Dr. Songer founded Superior Medical Research Foundation.  Prior to that he founded Pioneer Surgical Technology in 1992 in order to address what he saw as a lack of critically needed, innovative orthopaedic and spinal implants and instruments to treat degenerative conditions and traumatic injuries.  He is the inventor of the Songer Cable Sysytem and developed the first IDE study approved Nucleus Replacement  Device in the USA.  He holds numerous patents and maintains 65 patent applications.  He has grown the company to a high-tech international business with hundreds of employees and numerous strategic partnerships.  His dedication to keeping his business based in Marquette area greatly benefits the local economy and skilled job creation.  On the active lifestyle side, he is an avid sailor, Alpine and cross-country skier, biker, runner and hunter.

A native of Michigan, Dr. Songer has a B.S. in biological sciences from Michigan Technological University, an MBA from Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management and an M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  He completed his orthpaedic residency at the University of Illinois Hospital and spinal fellowship at Northwestern University.  He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Songer has been married for 31 years to Laura and they have two sons, Jason and Marcus, and a daughter, Linnea.
