Business Scholarships

Northern Michigan University offers a variety of types of scholarships including need-based, merit and college/program specific.  Learn more about NMU’s overall scholarships program by visiting the Scholarship and Grants page.  What follows are the descriptions of scholarships that pertain to the College of Business.

International Travel and Study Abroad Scholarship

Scholarships of $500 are available to assist full-time students who participate in a semester- or year-long NMU affiliated program (students studying abroad during the summer semester may be considered if they are enrolled full time) or on faculty-led travel programs. The number of scholarships awarded annually varies. Recipient must be at least sophomore status with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. First preference is given to students who choose to study business courses while on their study or travel abroad. Second preference is for students who choose to participate in a business focused internship while abroad. Third preference is given to students who choose to study in a developing country, and fourth preference is for students who choose to study abroad for an academic year. The Office of International Affairs will interview the applicants and select recipients. See www.nmu.edu/international.

John and Shirley Berry Annual Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2011 and will provide support for incoming freshmen who have demonstrated academic ability and achievement. Recipient must be admitted to NMU’s Honors Program. First preference given to declared College of Business majors. Second preference to declared science, technology, engineering, or math majors. Third preference will be given to all other declared majors. See the Honors Program site for the application process for this scholarship. Note Honors Program Scholarship deadlines posted there.

Beta Gamma Sigma Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2005 by the Beta Gamma Sigma honorary society and the College of Business. The recipient is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma selected by the Beta Gamma Sigma faculty advisors.

Andrew and Theresa Brunswick Marketing Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2004 by Dr. Gary and Kimberly Brunswick in memory of Dr. Brunswick's paternal grandparents, who were lifelong residents of the Upper Peninsula. The recipient must be a full-time student majoring in marketing and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to students from the Upper Peninsula. The scholarship will be awarded based on the recommendation of the College of Business Scholarship Committee to the University Scholarship Committee, which will make the final selection.

Carol E. and Thomas V. Buchl Scholarship

Candidates must be students enrolled in the College of Business in a two- or four-year business program with a minimum GPA of 2.25.

Kenneth J. and Virginia A. Bureau Scholarship

Recipient must be a full-time student majoring in management or marketing and must hold junior or senior status. Preference will be given to a graduate of an Upper Peninsula high school. The academic areas of management, marketing and computer information systems provides a list of four or five finalists by March 15 of each year for the contributors to review and make a recommendation to the University Committee on Financial Aids. The committee will then make the final decision. The contributors have requested that for each final list, the University provide them with a report summarizing the individual's need for the scholarship, including a family history, where applicable.

Dr. George Carnahan Scholarship

Established in 2003 in honor of Dr. George Carnahan by NMU alumni who were nmembers of the professional business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi. Dr. Carnahan was a founding faculty advisor of Alpha Kappa Psi and served as department head and dean of the School of Business during his 38 years at NMU. The scholarship supports students with a major in management.

Sam M. Cohodas College of Business Scholarship

Candidates must be full-time students who will be juniors, seniors or graduate students with a major in business. Candidates must demonstrate leadership skills and show promise of future business success as evidenced by two letters from faculty, preferably at least one from a faculty member from the College of Business. A minimum 3.00 GPA is required. Special consideration will be given to Upper Peninsula students. The College of Business nominates qualified students to the University Scholarship Committee, which makes the final selection.

Sam and Evelyn Cohodas Scholarship

Preference shall be given to students from the Upper Peninsula interested in the field of banking. Should no such student be available, a qualified student interested in business administration may be chosen. Consideration shall be given to the character, ability, and financial need of the student.

John and Susi Dahlke Scholarship

The recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Business or Education and a graduate of an Upper Peninsula high school. Nominations will be made by the Education and Business faculty, with final selection by the University Scholarship Committee.

The James and Judy Davis Fund

This scholarship will provide financial support to qualifying students participating in a finance program in the College of Business.

Burton G. Frick Endowed Scholarship in Business

The recipient must be a College of Business student of junior status or above. Additionally, first priority will go to a student from the Chicago, Illinois area. Second priority will go to a resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Columbia Hansen Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a woman graduate or undergraduate students from the Upper Peninsula interested in the field of banking. Should there be no such student, a qualified woman student interested in business administration may be chosen. Consideration shall be given to the character, ability, and financial need of the student.

The John W. Herbert Accounting Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1988 by John W. Herbert. It is given annually to a junior accounting major whose performance in the classroom is evidenced by a grade point of not less than 3.0. This student's leadership ability is evidenced by outside activities, including leadership positions within those activities and interest and ability to pursue a career in public accounting.

The Timothy Herbert Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established in 2012 by Timothy Herbert. It will provide financial support to qualifying students enrolled in the College of Business.

Gloria and William Jackson Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1999 by Gloria and William Jackson. Candidates must be full-time students at Northern Michigan University.  Preference will be given to students who are graduates of Marquette Senior High School and are majoring in business. If no student meets the criteria then preference shall be as stated in the following order: graduates of any high school in the Upper Peninsula majoring in business; graduates of Marquette Senior High School in any major; and graduates of any high school in the Upper Peninsula in any major.

Yolanda M. Kline Memorial Scholarship

Applicants will be full-time students with preference given to graduating seniors of Gwinn High School, followed by students from the Upper Peninsula who are majoring in business management.

Patricia A. and David E. Lahti Scholarship

This scholarship shall be used for students majoring in business in the Walker L. Cisler College of Business. The recipient must be from the Upper Peninsula and have an NMU GPA of 2.75 or higher and demonstrate financial need. Candidates will be nominated by the College of Business Scholarship Committee and the final selection will be made by the University Scholarship Committee.

  • 2012-13 Scholarship Recipients: Nikolas M. Flood, Nicholas P. Lefebre, Cherly A. Schroeder, Raquel R. Johnson, and Joanna R. Pellizzer.

Lake Superior and Ishpeming Scholarship

Recipient shall be an undergraduate student majoring in business administration. The student shall show leadership potential and promise for success in the business field. Financial need shall be clearly established.

Kenneth A. Larsen Accounting Scholarship

This scholarship will be offered to an undergraduate student majoring full time in accounting with an emphasis in public accounting and a minimum GPA of 3.25. The scholarship will be awarded based on the decision of the College of Business Scholarship Committee.

John F. List '84 Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2009 as a result of a gift from John F. List, Class of 1984.

John M. Longyear Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1999 in memory of John M. Longyear by John M. Longyear Heirs, a Limited Partnership. Candidates must be full-time students of sophomore status or above majoring in business. Renewable up to three years after initial award.

Ludlow Family Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student with junior standing in the Walker L. Cisler College of Business, majoring in computer information systems, who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.25. The student should demonstrate financial need by employment to meet education goals. Preference will be given to a graduate of an Upper Peninsula high school. The Ludlow Scholarship Committee will nominate candidates to the University Scholarship Committee, which will make the final award.

Makela, Toutant, Hill and Nardi P.C. Accounting Scholarship

This scholarship shall assist full-time undergraduate students majoring in accounting. Those eligible must have a preference for (or a strong interest in) the field of public accounting. The candidates must also show evidence of outstanding ability and potential based on scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character, extracurricular activities, etc. Primary consideration will be given to students not receiving grants from other sources. Awards should be made to students entering their last two semesters prior to receiving the baccalaureate degree.

Phyllis and Carlo Maki Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2007 in honor of Phyllis and Carlo Maki by friends and family.

James T. Malsack Scholarship

Established in 2006 by a bequest from James T. Malsack to supprt students with a major in business administration.

Michigan Upper Peninsula Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants Scholarship

Candidates must be juniors or seniors majoring in business administration. They must be an active member of Institute of Managerial Accountants. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required. Selected by Michigan Upper Peninsula Chapter of IMA Board.

  • 2012-13 Scholarship Recipient: Jesse Burnett.

Robert S. Myefski Memorial Scholarship

The recipient must be a full-time junior or senior who graduated from an Upper Peninsula high school and has achieved at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA while in attendance at NMU.

The Gladys & Llyod Neson Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2000 by Frank L. Nelson '78 in memory of his grandparents, Gladys and Llyod Nelson, to support students enrolled in a program in the School of Technology and Applied Sciences or College of Business.

Ann and Robert Pecotte Scholarship

Recipient must be a deserving full-time junior or senior majoring in business at Northern Michigan University. Preference shall be given to a high school graduate from Marquette or Menominee counties. Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.00. The College of Business will nominate qualified candidates to the University Scholarship Committee, which will make the final selection.

Albert L. Quaal Scholarship

Preference will be given to students from Marquette, Crawford and Otsego counties. Preference will also be given to students enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, the College of Business. The University Scholarship Committee will make the final selection from nominations made through the Financial Aid Office.

The Range Bank Scholarship

Student must be a Business or Finance major from Marquette County.

Fred C. and Jane B. Sabin Scholarship

Recipients must be a full-time junior or senior in the Walker L. Cisler College of Business and have a GPA of 3.25 or higher. The recipient must also be a graduate of an Upper Peninsula high school. The faculty of the College of Business nominates candidates to the University Scholarship Committee, which makes the final decision.

The Telford Risk Management Scholarship
 

This scholarship was established in 2010 by Ernie Telford for students participating in the risk management program. Recipients must be a full-time junior in the Walker L. Cisler College of Business and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The Two Men and a Truck International, Inc. Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2010 for students pursuing a degree in the College of Business. Recipients must be a full-time junior or senior in the Walker L. Cisler College of Business and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • 2012-13 Scholarship Recipient: Melinda S. Nordquist.

Lorna Weddle Scholarship

The recipient must be a full-time student who has completed one semester of full-time undergraduate study, has maintained a 3.00 GPA and is enrolled in a program of study in the office administration and/or business education. Preference is given to students from the Upper Peninsula. Selection of the recipient of the scholarship will be made by the faculty in those academic areas.

The Peter White Student Scholarship

The recipient must be a Michigan resident and a full-time student in the College of Business. Preference will be given to candidates who are from the Upper Peninsula and who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Candidates will be nominated by the College of Business, and the final selection will be made by the University Scholarship Committee. At least two scholarships of up to the amount of sixteen credit hours of in-state tuition per semester will be awarded annually (depending upon earnings available).

Stan Whitman Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to an Upper Peninsula resident who is an athlete in basketball, football or swimming. Preference will be given to those studying in the School of Education, Leadership and Public Service, College of Business or School of Nursing.
