Northern Michigan University places a “hold” on a student’s registration, transcript request, diploma or certificate when the student has not met conditions or obligations due the university. The following are general reasons for a hold:
A hold may be placed at the request of the chairperson of the Admissions and Academic Policies Committee on the enrollment of a student who has been suspended or dismissed for failure to maintain the standards outlined in the Academic Proficiency Policy.
Adviser Registration Hold
A hold may be placed on a student’s registration status to ensure that a student has met his or her adviser prior to registering for courses.
Dean of Students Hold
A hold may be placed by the Dean of Students Office on students who have unresolved or on-going disciplinary or behavioral issues.
First Year Experience (FYE) Hold
All students participating in NMU's FYE program have a hold placed on their account at the time of FYE registration. This hold remains in place until course registration for the subsequent semester. The hold prohibits students from independently adjusting their pre-determined FYE schedules.
A hold may be placed by the Student Service Center for any financial obligation due to the university (bookstore charges, parking fines, tuition, room and board, etc.), current or past due. A financial hold prohibits the release of official transcripts, diplomas, and may affect the ability to register for courses.
TLC (Laptop) Hold
A hold may be placed by MicroRepair/Asset Management against a student that has failed to return their NMU issued laptop computer by the established return deadline date. Students are not eligible to keep a laptop if they are not registered or preregistered for credit earning courses at NMU. Laptop holds are removed only when the laptop has been returned; late fees may apply. Students may contact Asset Management at 906-227-1422, or 906-227-1256, or e-mail email@example.com to have the hold removed. A fee may be charged to remove the hold. A TLC (Laptop) Hold also prohibits the release of official transcripts, diplomas, and may affect the ability to register for courses.
A measles policy hold may be placed on students taking classes on campus who have not submitted of current proof of measles (rubeola) vaccination.
A hold may be placed by the director of admissions or registrar on the enrollment of a student who fails to provide proof of high school graduation or transcripts from previous colleges attended.
