MAY 1-2, 2009

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

AND

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

BART STUPAK

U.S. CONGRESSMAN

MICHIGAN’S 1ST DISTRICT, D-MENOMINEE

U. S. Congressman Bart Stupak will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.  He will also be the NMU Spring Commencement Speaker.

Congressman Stupak has represented Michigan’s first congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 1992.  He has authored legislation to ban drilling for oil and gas in and under the Great Lakes, is the author of legislation creating federal funding for the NMU United States Olympic Education Center, has worked tirelessly securing millions of dollars for NMU Public Radio and Television’s digital broadcasting conversion, and was instrumental in helping NMU receive FCC licensing and approval for its new WIMAX wireless internet technology.  As a member of Congress, he also worked on the funding for the New Science Facility on campus.  Stupak actively participates in the Washington Center Internship Program with Northern Michigan University students.  He co-hosts events that Northern sponsors in the Washington area, and he is a vigorous participant in many NMU activities conducted in Marquette and the Upper Peninsula.  He is a frequent guest in NMU classrooms, spends time with NMU students, and his Washington and district offices are regularly inhabited by NMU interns.

Northern is most fortunate to have such a tireless representative in Congress working on its behalf and is proud to have Bart Stupak as an adopted alumnus.
