Students Against Sulfide Mining (S.A.S.M.)

Advisor: Dr. John Rebers, NSF 2011
Organization E-mail: saveourwaters4future@yahoo.com
Mission statement: To insure the future of Michigan's water quality Students Against Sulfide Mining formed due to the threat of Sulfide mining in the Upper Peninsula and the danger such industry poses to the fragile ecosystems and water supplies of the Upper Peninsula. The primary goal of this organization is to actively educate as SASM many people as possible about the proposed Sulfide-mining prospects in the Upper Peninsula and the many possible hazards posed by such development. The strength of S.A.S.M. lies with our continuing research efforts on the part of our membership to improve our collective knowledge of Sulfide mining, particularly in the state of Michigan.
Activities: Letter-writing parties, hiking, camping, distributing buttons, designing and distributing educational literature, writing letters to the editor, writing the occasional guest column or feature for NMU publications, attending and participating in public government hearings, marching in parades, and talking to people about Sulfide mining.
