Botany

Botany, or plant biology, encompasses a wide variety of fields ranging from agricultural research to plant community biology to the study of microbial interactions with plants. Students interested in careers in plant biology have an opportunity to take classes in general plant biology, plant physiology, botany and plant ecology. We also have an extensive greenhouse facility, growth chambers, and herbarium (collection of preserved plant specimens). Some of the ongoing research in the department addresses the interaction between plants and large mammals, the effects of fire on plant communities, and the effect of fungi and bacteria located in the rhizosphere on plant growth.

Students interested in this area might consider any of the Biology Department majors.
