ASL Students Learn About Health Care in Honduras
Students learned about the Honduran culture and health care in Latin America. Working with community partners in rural Honduras, the students advocated for the development of a regional health care center to meet the health care needs in this medically under-served area.
As part of the academic service learning component of the trip, students
provided health education teaching for on nutrition and dental hygiene for children and their parents. To address current nutritional deficits the children were provided with a three month supply of multivitamins purchased with the support of an ASL Action Grant. Students also assisted with immunizations in clinics and conducted more than 150 physical examinations in a public elementary school.
The students found the experience life changing. In the words of one student:
“…this trip, honestly, changed my life. I have such a different attitude about the world and even the small things in life... I learned a vast base of knowledge in Honduras, but I learned the most about myself.”
