Historical note

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is one of the largest labor unions in the United States. AFSCME is part of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), one of the two main labor federations in the United States. Council 25 was created on March 23, 1978 and encompasses all AFSCME-AFL/CIO members in Michigan (currently totaling over 90,000 members). Council 7 formerly encompassed the ten counties in the southwestern corner of Michigan. Council 11 formerly encompassed all fifteen counties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These former councils are now called "regions" under the new Council 25.
