Historical Note

Peter Barbeau and the Scranton family operated as bankers and general merchants for the Upper Peninsula and were based in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. They engaged in business transactions with merchants as far away as New York City but mainly Canada and cities around the Great Lakes, particularly Chicago and Detroit.

Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains, but is not limited to, ship manifests, seaman's oaths, and correspondence documenting the business transactions and shipping by Peter B. Barbeau and the Scranton family, bankers and general merchants to and from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The collection provides important historical insight into nineteenth century trade between the Upper Peninsula, Canada, and various cities and regions around the Great Lakes. The collection's materials date from 1820 to 1900.

This collection is on deposit with legal ownership retained by the Marquette Maritime Museum.

Conditions Governing Access note

No restrictions. Open for research.

Custodial History Note

The Bishop Baraga Association of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette donated the collection to the Marquette Maritime Museum in 1996. Regis Walling, Association archivist, discovered the collection in a storage room, and was unable to find a record for how the collection came to the Baraga Association.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Marquette Maritime Museum placed this collection on deposit at the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University in 1998.
