Historical Note

In 1918, the United States Army established the Students' Army Training Corp (SATC) at Northern State Normal School (now Northern Michigan University) in Marquette, Michigan and registered 104 men. The Army housed the men in the old Longyear dormitory on campus. They received $30 per month and reimbursement for food and housing. During the fall of 1918, Northern closed as a result of the Spanish Influenza epidemic and the men were quarantined in the dormitory. The SATC program ended in January 1920.

Baseball at Northern started in the summer of 1915 and lasted until 1923. The program ended because of bad weather and competition from city and local teams.

W. Douglas McIntosh graduated from Northern State Normal School in 1920.

Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains five photographs and a letter. Two photographs depict a group of Students' Army Training Corp (SATC) members standing in front of a building in Marquette, Michigan wearing hospital clothing. This image may depict an infirmary for victims of the Spanish Influenza Epidemic of 1918-1919. The second group of three photographs are team pictures of the Northern State Normal School (now Northern Michigan University) baseball team. The group is standing behind the Kaye Hall complex. The photographs, taken by W. Douglas McIntosh, are dated 1919-1920. The collection includes a letter from McIntosh dated 1968 in which he describes the effort to organize a class reunion.
