Historical note

The Iron Workers Union Local 783 (officially known as the International Association of Bridge, Structural, and Ornamental Iron Workers Local 783) was formed in 1957 during the construction of the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. The union merged with Local 8 in 1994, taking on the name Local 8.

Scope and Content Note

This collection documents the activities of Iron Workers Local 787. The collection consists of by-laws, meeting minutes, contracts, correspondence, financial records, audits, Pension Fund, Benefit Fund, and Health and Welfare Trust records. The collection also includes election information. The significant components of the collection are the by-laws, contracts, and a complete set of membership meeting minutes since 1957.

Bylaws and Meeting Minutes, 1957-1997 Records include a complete set of membership meeting minutes. The material also includes a complete set of bylaws, revisions, and an original charter listing.

Financial Records This material represents a extensive collection of financial material and includes IRS tax information and audits, Apprenticeship Training Fund, ledgers, canceled checks, membership dues records, bank account records, benefits, trust agreements, vacation fund, and office equipment. The records also include payroll records (1977-1992) and a general fund tax audit (1993).

Pension Fund, Benefit Fund, and Health and Welfare Trust Records Records include correspondence, meeting minutes, audits, financial reports, Pension Reciprocity Transfer and Agreements. Material documents the administration of the fund first by the Travelers, Inc. and then by the Benefit Plan Administration of Wisconsin, Inc. Many of the records are contained in 9 three-ringed binders, inlcuding one binder of microfiche Benefit Fund records.
