Biographical note

The Jacques family described in this collection descends from Louis Jacques, who was born in Amiens, province of Picardie, France in 1662 and immigrated to Quebec, Canada in 1680. There Louis Jacques married Antoinette Le Roux in 1688, and subsequently moved to Charlesbourg, Canada. By the fourth generation of descendants, the family had moved to St. Cuthbert, Canada and later descendants spread to the United States. The ancestors traced include Louis Jacques (1662-1735), Louis Jacques II (b. 1694), Joseph Jacques (b. 1722), Joseph Jacques II (b. 1750), Joseph Jacques III (b. 1777), and Zacharie Jacques (b. 1833). The genealogy was compiled by Arthur Francis Jacques (1874-1945), son of Zacharie Jacques. Arthur served as a bookkeeper; Vice-President and General Manager of the Pickands Coal and Dock Company in Marquette, MI; President of the Union National Bank in Marquette, MI; and mayor of Marquette, MI during his career.
