Historical Sketch:
The history of Saint Paul’s church begins in the 1840’s when the first Episcopalians of Marquette began having services aboard the steamship Planet in Marquette harbor. The actual edifice of Saint Paul’s was not built until 1857 at the corner of Ridge and High streets in Marquette. The wooden structure of the first church was bought by the German Lutherans and moved two blocks down the street when the current St. Paul’s church was built.
The current church was built in 1874 at a cost of $80,000. After the building of the main church, additions were added on. One of Marquette’s town founders, Peter White, funded the building of a chapel in 1887. This chapel was named the Morgan memorial chapel in honor of his deceased son, and also has a window that was created by the Tiffany Glass Company. Later, in 1900, a tower was added to the main edifice which was partially made out of brownstone that was found at the old high school grounds. In 1909 the Guild Hall was built as a recreation center for the whole Marquette community. The Guild Hall was later torn down in 1989 due to bad condition. The area where the Guild Hall used to be is now a parking lot.
From its first meetings until 1895 Saint Paul’s had been a part of the diocese of Michigan. In 1895 Saint Paul’s became a cathedral with the creation of the diocese of Marquette, which was later renamed as the Diocese of Northern Michigan. The Rev. G. Mott Williams was made the first bishop of the diocese and has been followed by eight others, the latest being Thomas K. Ray.

Scope and Content Note:
The records of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church consist of materials that begin in 1856 and continue until 1998. The collection is contained within eight regular-sized document boxes, two small grey boxes for photographs, one large flat box for oversized items, and one drawer in the oversized item storage (map case). The collection contains many items of interest including a complete set of vestry minutes, photographs of past reverends, the history of the parish as written by the first bishop of the Diocese of Northern Michigan G. Mott Williams, and various letters from many of the town founders of Marquette including Peter White and Philo Everett.
The records are broken down into eleven series: Buildings, Bishops, Clubs/ Organizations, Donations, Finance, History, Photos, Publications, Reports, Reverends, Venture In Mission, and Oversized/ Separated Items. The first series, Buildings, documents the different buildings that are owned and surround St. Paul’s and the decoration and remodeling of the church itself. Also included in this series is information on the pipe organs. The second series, Bishops, catalogues the eight bishops of the Diocese of Marquette (now known as the Diocese of Northern Michigan). The most notable portion of this series is the history of the parish as told by G. Mott Williams, first bishop of Marquette. Also contained in this series are three diaries of Bishop Williams and a history of the Diocese of Marquette. Clubs and Organizations make up the third series and contain the various minutes from parish organizations. Of particular interest are the complete minutes of the Women’s Auxiliary. The fourth series is Donations and includes such things as records of monetary gifts that the parish has received as well as trust agreements dating back to the 1920’s.
The fifth series of Finance has many interesting pieces including information dealing with the mortgage foreclosure threat of 1878 as well as the abstract of title and parish incorporation. In the sixth series, History, some of the most interesting items are contained. These items include information on past parishioners, various newspaper clippings on church history and events, and parish directories. Also included in this series are a few artifacts including Sunday school and choir pins. Series seven, Photos, has photographs of the reverends of St. Paul’s dating back to 1866. In series eight, Publications, the bulletins are contained in a nearly complete set from 1968 to 1989. Series nine has a complete set of the records of the vestry including minutes, dating from its formation until the late eighties. The tenth series contains correspondence and other materials on past reverends of the church. In series eleven there is information on the venture in mission program, where parishioners could be able to go on missions to various countries, and in the twelfth series there are over sized and separated items that include blueprints, watercolors, and registries. The thirteenth and final series is a collection of photographs that chronicle events, bishops and reverends of the parish.
Other items of interest in this collection include some descriptions and articles on surrounding houses that either current or former parishioners have or had owned. The most notable of these being a folder on dandelion cottage on which the children’s book is based. Also of interest is the first parish registry that dates from 1855.
