NMU and Regional Oral History Collection
Prepared by Patrice Davis and Crystal Laudeman
Provenance Statement:
Dr. Russ Magnaghi, Department of History, and the Audio-Visual Department at Northern Michigan University are the creators of this collection. Since the early 1980s, Dr. Magnaghi has conducted an oral history program on selected subjects documenting the history of the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In 1995, Dr. William Vandement, president of NMU, appointed Dr. Magnaghi University Historian in preparation for the University’s centennial celebration in 1999. In this capacity, Dr. Magnaghi conducted numerous oral history interviews with faculty and staff that had a significant impact on the historical development of NMU. NMU’s Audio-Visual Department completed the remainder of the recordings as part of their official responsibility to records official events on campus.
Scope and Content Note:
The Northern Michigan University and Area Audio Collection consists of 29 boxes, 23 of which contain the cassettes in cassette boxes, while the rest hold the transcripts in letter size boxes. The Northern Michigan University Audio Collection consists of faculty, staff, alumni, and student life interviews. The collection also contains historical interviews concerning the university and the former J.D. Pierce School. The collection includes lectures from the McGoff Lecture series with lectures from Gerald Ford and Alexander Ginzberg, among others. The collection also consists of debates, press conferences, presidential addresses, and special events, such as dedications, musical events, and commencements. Personal collections are also included from Lulu Ervast and Sam Cohodas. Student oral history projects include interviews pertaining to World War II and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Area Oral Histories add to the collection’s depth and scope. These tapes consist of interviews pertaining to the Ishpeming Ski Hall of Fame, iron mining, local celebrations, and events. Some of the interviews also deal with ethnicities in the Upper Peninsula, including an interview with Carl Pallompaa, known for his Sunday morning Finnish related television program.
Two general categories divide the collection into material related to Northern Michigan University and material related to the Central Upper Peninsula. Within these two categories, the collection is arranged into 21 record series. The series are arranged chronologically while oral history interviews are arranged by subject as well as alphabetically. Transcripts for many of the interviews may also be found in the collection.
