The Origins of Economics (EC495)
Greetings Economics Majors and Minors!
For the first time, the Department of Economics will offer the Origins of Economics (EC495) with Dr. Tawni Hunt Ferrarini, Sam M. Cohodas Professor. We will start with a contemporary view of what economics is believed to be and then we will go back and read parts of the classics to compare what the fathers of economics wanted it to be. Readings include, but are not limited to, selected parts of The Wealth of Nations by A. Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments by A. Smith, The Works and Correspondences of D. Ricardo, The Road to Serfdom by F. Hayek, Capital by K. Marx and so forth.
The structure of the class will be Socratic seminar. I will ask questions to start dialogue. Students will ask their own questions, provide answers, offer statements with cited reasons and evidence, and listen to each other respectfully.
The class will hopefully be small, and this will give us the wonderful opportunity of learning a lot among each other. Contact Dr. Ferrarini at tferrari@nmu.edu if you have questions. My hope is help students bring in one or two outside speakers…
I hope to see you in EC495!
Warm regards,
Tawni Hunt Ferrarini, Ph.D.
