The Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1975 to recognize NMU athletes and/or teams who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics, either by virtue or their performance on athletic teams representing NMU or by meritorious efforts on behalf of athletics as an undergraduate or in the years after leaving the university. Consideration is also given to those who have made other significant contributions to the athletic program at NMU.
The induction ceremony is traditionally held on the Friday night of Homecoming Week.
