A truck unloads wood chips at the new biomass fueled cogeneration combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The addition to the Ripley Heating plant will produce up to 16% electrical and 87% thermal needs for NMU. Project Details.

January looks like it will be one of the coldest since the 1990s. Early February looks like it will bring in more of the same with temps consistently dropping in to the negatives. Let's hope for a good result this Sunday on Groundhogs Day.

Staying Wild: Alumni Board Highlight

Seven new board members joined the NMU Alumni Association Board of Directors at the annual meeting during Homecoming. The board’s responsibilities are to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services for alumni of NMU and advise alumni staff on new programming.


Alicia Chenhalls ‘93
majored in public relations, international studies, and Spanish. She resides in Rochester, Michigan, working as a human resource manager at Grupo Antolin North America.  While attending NMU, Alicia was an ASNMU – UC Quad Vice President, a student speaker for the Al Gore visit and received the NMU Board of Control Student Achievement Award.  She is a member of the Rochester Hills Junior Women’s Club.


Scott Francis ‘80
is the Co-founder of Snap Lab Media™ and President of Topline Development, LLC, providing consultation to organizations who wish to increase mobile brand awareness, customer engagement and product and promotional development.  He is the author of a syndicated business column and the book “Marketing Is About Making Money.” Scott earned his master’s degree in business administration at Northern. He lives in Neenah, Wisconsin with his wife Mary ’79

David Mogush ‘84 lives in Thiensville, Wisconsin, wish his wife Cindy and son Carson.  He works as a business development manager at KleenMark.  While at Northern he majored in management while also playing hockey.


David O’Conner ‘96
graduated with a degree in psychology with biology concentrations in neuroscience and psychopharmacology. As a student, David worked at The North Wind, was a teaching apprentice in the Psychology Department and was Professor John Renfrew’s research assistant.  David has been active in the Knights of Columbus, Knights of Equity, Ancient Order of Hibernians, United Irish Societies, and is the co-chair of Government Affairs for the Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.  He is a Financial Advisor for Blue Water International.  David lives in Royal Oak, Michigan with his wife Amy ’95 and their three children.


Kelsey M. Potes ‘13
majored in public relations and marketing, and works as a development and public relations administrative assistant at Bellin College in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Recently married to Rick ’08, the two live in Green Bay with their golden retriever.  As a student, Kelsey was active in PRSSA, Superior Edge, Pre-Med Club, and Wildcats for Life while on campus.  She is a member of Current, a young professional’s network in the Fox Valley.


Walter Scanlon ‘81 ‘86
is employed by Duke Life Point/Marquette General Health System, where his department twice earned the hospital’s Pulsar Award for their innovations.  While under his direction, the cancer program earned its National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers (NAPBC).  In 1996, Walter was the recipient of the Dr. Sharon Janzen Award, and has been an active participant for “Ask the Doctors.”  Walter is a member of the Negaunee Lions International, and his church choir and finance committee.  He earned Bachelor’s degrees in nursing and industrial technology from Northern.


Stacy Welling-Haughey ‘00
’02 is the Upper Peninsula Regional Director for the Department of National Resources and Environment.  She lives in Gwinn with her husband and daughter.  While at Northern she earned a Bachelor’s degree, majoring in public relations and management, and a Master’s degree in public administration.  She was a cheerleader and later a cheerleading coach.  She has served as a Student Leader Fellowship Program mentor, Public TV 13 volunteer anchor, and member of the Delta and Marquette County Jaycees.

Dave Brackett '72 was a member of team USA for the 1st FIPS-Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship, held Jan. 20-25 in Aysen-Patagonia region in Southern Chile. Team USA finished 4th behind Italy, Czechoslovakia, and Chile. Dave is pictured 2nd from the left during the opening parade in the capital of district 10, Coyhaique. Dave thanks NMU for the opportunity it gave him to start his love of fly fishing.
