Campus Captured

A view of the NMU Women's Soccer field just off the shores of Lake Superior. The soccer team ended their season this week in post season play losing in the GLIAC quarterfinals. The team had an overall record of 5-10-3 and 5-5-3 in the conference.

Seasonal temperatures have settled into the region hovering around the mid 30s with the occasional snow fall or even flurries. Today brings sunshine with a possible high of 40 degrees.

Staying Wild: Branding Study

NMU continues to work on the rebranding efforts with our consulting firm, Genesis.  Genesis is an international marketing company; we work primarily with staff members out of its Denver and Grand Rapids offices.  Since last spring’s university forum when President Haynes discussed the branding initiative, there has been considerable progress made.  However, we’re a long way from a finished campaign.  In April, Genesis representatives were on campus to interview dozens of NMU students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members.  Their goal was to delve deeper into some of the key points revealed from the previous year’s Stamats survey research.  Genesis returned to campus last summer with some ideas for the brand promise, or what is known as a tagline. While at NMU, the Genesis representatives tested the taglines during a series of focus groups, which were made up of students, faculty and staff.  The tagline that seemed to get the most traction was “Fearless Minds.”  Our goal in changing the NMU tagline is to broaden what we started with “Northern. Naturally,” so that it speaks to even more potential students, especially millennial, graduate and international students.

Right now, Genesis is working on conceptual pieces so people can see “Fearless Minds” with stories and images, and how they will use opportunities to still bring in NMU’s strong tie to our unique location.  The preliminary pieces have been quite powerful.  There is an NMU branding work group made up of students, faculty and staff that is assisting Genesis in making sure that what is created looks, feels and sounds like Northern.  As the branding and marketing pieces are developed, they will be tested in more rounds of focus groups.  While students do not always have the same level of experience with the creative process that many faculty and staff do, time needs to be allowed to give these new ideas a chance to evolve. Until one sees “Fearless Minds” with actual content, it’s difficult to measure how it compares to “Northern. Naturally,” which has been used since the mid-1990s.
