Staying Wild: WildCATS: Connecting Alumni To Students

The mission of the Northern Michigan University Alumni Association is to cultivate a strong tradition of loyalty and involvement among alumni, students, friends and community while advancing the interests of the university.  So, it was especially important when a group of students came to a Board Meeting last year and expressed an interest in bringing more alumni back to campus in an effort to learn about their experiences and journey since leaving NMU.

Out of this request, a new initiative was born: WildCATS: Connecting Alumni To Students.

Months in the making, the activity line-up for this inaugural event includes classroom visits, skillbuilders, speed networking and a featured speaker event.  The common theme in each event is to connect students and alumni and offer an opportunity for students to learn what alumni have done with their NMU degree, what advice they have for students today, and how alumni might be helpful in preparing today’s Wildcats for their future careers.

Past and present Board Members are the volunteers for this first WildCAT effort, but there are plans to grow the event to incorporate more alumni volunteers in future years.  Events are sponsored by the NMU Alumni Association, Wildcats for Life, a student organization dedicated to building connections with NMU alumni, and Career Services.

Would you like to participate in WildCATS?  Alumni are welcome to attend each event and we’re still looking for volunteers for the Speed Networking event with students.  Not available to attend in person?  Join the conversation on NMU’s Alumni Association Facebook page, and give your career and life advice to students.  Do you have ideas for next year?  Let us know!

A detailed schedule of events can be found here.

NMU Takes First at the 2013 Winter Baja Race

NMU’s Baja race team stood up to the challenge of the 2013 Winter Baja held on the campus of Michigan Tech, February 15 in Houghton, Mich. NMU took first place among the crowd of 48 other cars from schools such as, University of Michigan, Michigan Tech, UW-Milwaukee and Virginia Tech, all top engineering schools within the country.Additionaly, NMU held the honors of the “fastest lap” making it a clean sweep for the Wildcats.

Earlier in the year NMU’s Baja team took a second place in the UW-Stout fall competition. The team also took the “fastest lap” there as well.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Baja team at NMU is made up of student volunteers. The team includes: Dan Klim (President), Andy Shafer (Vice President), Matt Bair, Matthew Barbercheck, Ed Sanderson, Andy Miller, Kale Reid, Brad Ripp, Chris Taylor, Brad Richard, Aaron Toth, Steve Giles, Kyle St. John, and John Grassmyer. The team members at the wheel during the Michigan Tech four hour competition were Andy Shafer, Matt Bail, Dan Klim and Chris Taylor. NMU also ran a second car for the first time in competition driven by Andy Miller, Kale Reid, Brad Ripp and Ed Sanderson.

The success of the NMU Baja team would not be possible without the support of NMU and NMU alumni. The team would like to especially thank the College of Professional Studies, the Engineering Technology Department, Bob Flood '75 of Argonics Inc., and Curt Tucker '82 of Teamtech Motorsports.

Students of all majors are welcome to join the club. Email Dan Klim at dklim@nmu.edu for more information.

Staying Connected

Thanks to all of you who have visited the Alumni Office while on campus.  Whenever you’re in town, please drop by 607 Cohodas Hall to say hello.  (You don’t have to be visiting - for those of you who live in Marquette, we want to see you too!  Please stop in.)  If you can’t get to campus but you’re off exploring the world, be sure to send us a photo of you wearing your favorite Wildcat gear so we can share it with other alumni.

Dr. Randall Jensen, Professor of Sport and Exercise Science, held an alumni get-together in St. Gallen, Switzerland last week.  Hosted by Lee Wennerberg ‘80 at her home, other alumni in attendance (from left to right) included Lee, Randy Jensen, Robert Brugman ’10, ’12, Paul Eigenmann, ’79, and Maureen Jensen, ’85, ’09.  The group will be getting together again in the spring, so if you find yourself in the area, please let the alumni office know and we’ll connect you with the group.

Second Lt. Rockne Belmonte, a 2012 graduate who participated in ROTC at NMU and was a kicker for the NMU football team, continues to pursue his dream of playing at football’s highest level.  He will compete in next month’s BSN Showcase, an event that will also be attended by scouts from the NFL, Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.  You can read more about Rockne and his journey here: http://www.army.mil/article/97072/.  Best of luck Rockne.
