Lucy Hough, Admissions Counselor
Hometown: I was born in Northville, Mich., which is located between Detroit and Ann Arbor.
Personal/professional biography: I graduated from Northern in May 2012 with a bachelor’s in history. I’m currently working on a master’s in English and should graduate in May 2014. As an undergraduate, I worked for NMU’s student newspaper, The North Wind, and then for NMU’s Communications and Marketing office. I started my master’s as a graduate assistant in the Communications office until I joined Admissions.
Most memorable college experience: My favorite experiences in my undergraduate were all of the production nights at the student newspaper. I spent hours, late into Wednesday nights, working with my best friends to put together the student newspaper. It was challenging and sometimes overwhelming, but we worked together and had a lot of fun while doing it.
Favorite Marquette activity: I love to watch the freight boats come in and out of the ore dock near Presque Isle. I feel like I could spend whole days sitting on the beach and watching the taconite pellets be loaded onto the enormous boats.
Best advice you received regarding college or would give someone else entering college: I would encourage students to follow their passions. College is a rare chance to explore different disciplines and gain a wide-range of experiences, and those things will benefit students for the rest of their lives.
