Cary Vajda -Assistant Director of Admissions, Transfer Students, Lower Michigan

Hometown: Grayling, Mich.

Professional/personal biography: I earned an associate of arts degree from Kirtland Community College in Roscommon, Mich., in 1972; a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Central Michigan University in 1977; and a master of arts degree in educational administration from Central Michigan University in 1982. My work experience includes nine years in the US Naval Reserve (Vietnam War veteran), nine years in community college admissions, and 12 years as the dean of students at a Michigan community college. Since 1999, I have been working in transfer admissions at NMU and I am based off-campus in Midland, Michigan, where I live with my wife, Sally. I have two children, Nathan and Emily, and one grandson. My daughter is a recent NMU theater graduate.

Most memorable college experience: I had the lead role in a college musical, The Fantasticks.

Favorite Marquette activity: Hiking

Best advice you received regarding college or would give someone entering college: Give it your best effort and take time to savor this part of your life.
