Governor Jennifer Granholm’s higher education funding proposal, as outlined in her 2010 executive budget, calls for an overall 3 percent decrease in spending for higher education. It also eliminates King-Chavez-Parks funding. Combined the cut to Northern Michigan University is 3.2 percent or a little more than $1.5 million.

Michigan’s House Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee presented its 2010 higher education funding bill on March 26. It calls for an overall 3 percent decrease in spending for Michigan’s 15 public universities, but the funds are restored with stimulus dollars, which brings the net difference between the current year and the 2010 fiscal to zero.
Michigan’s Senate Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee is in the process of hearing from each of Michigan’s 15 public university presidents. A proposal for fiscal year 2010 higher education funding is expected in late May or early June.
