Academic Affairs Value Scorecard
In today’s digital world when information and data are more accessible than ever, it is essential to have critical, analytical and actionable data available to decision-makers on a timely basis and in a user-friendly format. NMU’s Academic Dashboard is such a tool in that it presents key performance indicators in a succinct and easy-to-understand manner. More and more institutions of higher education are exploring ways to use and present dashboard information. Northern Michigan University (NMU) is among the trailblazers to build such a system.
With this dashboard, our focus is to provide all academic departments with a consistent measurement system in the four value propositions listed below. As a result, it affords the Academic Affairs evidence-based decision-making with increased accountability and transparency.
Value Proposition: Alignment with Upper Peninsula (UP) and Michigan Priorities
Goal: At NMU, we strive to be a valued educational, economic and cultural resource serving regional communities. Our goal is to contribute to UP and state priorities by creating and cultivating mutually beneficial relationships with increased partnerships from the local regions and beyond.
Value Proposition: Program Sustainability and Vitality
Goal: NMU is committed to providing dynamic educational programs that best meet the changing needs of our students in the larger societal environment. Data on enrollment and majors provide important indicators for our strategic planning. Information on student credit hours and faculty teaching loads will furnish us with solid evidence when we manage our resources to maximize student success.
Value Proposition: Student Success and Outcomes
Goal: Student success is the driving force behind everything we do at NMU. Our professional ethics obligates us to ensure student retention and graduation. Relentlessly, we strive to attract and support students not only for baccalaureate degrees, but also for associate degrees, certificates and other aspired educational pursuits of non-traditional students.
Value Proposition: Financial EffectivenessGoal: NMU focuses on achieving the optimal institutional effectiveness with transparency by monitoring specific key financial areas with well-established data systems. The goal is to provide benchmarks and trend data for a department to compare with itself as well as with other departments or the university.
Definitions for Applied and Service departments: Typically, more than 60% of the courses in an applied department are offered for their specific majors. Service departments primarily offer general education courses for all majors on campus and ordinarily have fewer majors than applied departments.
