Phone Features

On this page you will find information on how to perform various tasks using our telephone system. Click on one of the links below to be taken to the instruction section for that specific subject.

Auto Callback

Will notify you when the called party becomes available, in the case that the called party is busy.

  • Return to dial tone        
  • Dial *5
  • Dial busy extension number
  • Hear confirmation (3 short tones)
  • Hang up immediately

To cancel:

  • Pick up handset
  • Dial #5
  • Hear confirmation (3 short tones)

Blocking Caller ID

Prevents the called party from displaying Caller ID info

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial 767, then the number as usual

Call Forwarding

Calls will ring to an extension of your choice

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial *2
  • Dial the 4 digit extension
  • Hear confirmation tone (3 beeps)

To cancel:

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial #2
  • Hear confirmation tone (3 beeps)

Call Parking

Takes a call from your current phone, put it on hold, and pick it up on any phone on campus.

  • Press Park or Transfer (R, Tab, or press and release the switch hook)
  • Press #1
  • Press Transfer (R, Tab, or press and release the switch hook)
  • Hang up.

Your call is now in park

To pick up the parked call:

  • At another phone dial #7 and the extension where the call was parked

Call Pickup

Answer a call placed to a member of your call pickup group.

  • Pick up the handset
  • Press the Call Pickup button or dial #4

Conference

To add a party to your call (up to 6 including you)

  • Press Conference (R, Tab, or press and release the switch hook)
  • Dial the number you want to conference
  • Press Conference (R, Tab, or press and release the switch hook)

Hold

If you have a hold button:

  • Press Hold

If you don't have a hold button:

  • Press the switch hook
  • Dial *6

Last Number Dialed

The equivalent of redial:

  • Pick up handset
  • Dial 722

Priority Calling

Override call forwarding or send all calls (calls will ring at the number dialed)

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial *1
  • Dial 4 digit extension

Reminder Call

This is the same wakeup call service you would find at a Motel. This is to be considered a convenience service, not a service to be relied upon. Service rounds off to 5 minute increments. You can only have one active wakeup call at a time and the wakeup call must be reprogrammed after every call.

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial 765, follow voice prompts
  • Enter the time for your call (1200-1155) followed by # and either 2 or 7 (2 for AM or 7 for PM)
  • If you wish to avoid AM and PM, use the 24 hour clock (0000-2355) followed by #

Remote Send All Calls (SAC)

Send All Calls can be activated or deactivated from a remote location.

You must contact 227-1995 or telecom@nmu.edu to set this feature up for you.

  • Dial (906)227-1035 listen for dial tone
  • Dial 725 to activate SAC or 726 to deactivate SAC
  • Listen for dial tone, dial your 4-digit extension number followed by #
  • You will NOT receive another dial tone
  • Dial your security code followed by #
  • You will hear 3 short bursts of dial tone as a confirmation

Send All Calls (SAC)

Calls will go directly to a coverage point (usually NMU Voicemail)

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial *3 or press the Send All Calls (SAC) button

To cancel:

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial #3 or press the SAC button

Speed Dialing

To program speed dials:

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial *01
  • Dial an index number (choose 0-9)
  • Dial number (include "9" if off campus)
  • Dial #
  • Hear confirmation tone (3 beeps)


To use Speed Dials:

  • Pick up the handset
  • Dial *7
  • Dial the index number (choose 0-9)

Telecommuting - Alternate Call Coverage

This feature allows you to change the coverage path of your telephone between two predetermined coverage points either on or off campus.

For example, you can choose to answer your NMU telephone number from a predetermined remote location such as a cellular telephone or your home telephone. If you do not answer the call at your remote location, the call will go into your voice mailbox.

Transfer

  • Press Transfer (R, Tab, or press and release the switch hook)
  • Dial the 4 digit extension
  • Press Transfer (R, Tab, or press and release the switch hook)
  • Hang up

NMU Voice Mail Setup

  • Log in to https://voicemail.nmu.edu *Note that if you are off campus you must first login to the VPN*
  • Enter your NMU login and password (your email login/password)
  • Click settings
  • Enter a password to use from your telephone
  • Click update
  • Dial (906)227-1122
  • Enter your extension number and #
  • Enter your telephone password and #
  • Press 0 (zero)
  • Press 1 to record your unavailable greeting
  • Press 3 to record your name
  • You are done.

Advanced settings for NMU voice mail

  • Go to https://voicemail.nmu.edu
  • Log in and go to settings
    If you want to send voice messages to your email, enter your email address or addresses separated by semicolons. You can also choose to delete your voicemail messages as they are emailed. This way, you never need to log into the web page or use the phone to get voicemail messages, they simply come in as email.Ex:email1@nmu.edu;email2@hotmail.com
  • You can also enter your mobile address to get notified of new messages on your mobile.
  • Verizon users 906xxxxxxx@vtext.com
  • AT&T users 906xxxxxxx@txt.att.net
  • Click the update button when you’re done.
    • Once you have set up your account, you can access your messages via the web at https://voicemail.nmu.edu or via telephone at (906)227-1122
  • Press 1 To - Check New Messages
  • Press 4 To - Play Previous Message
  • Press 5 To - Repeat Message
  • Press 6 To - Play Next Message
  • Press 7 To - Delete / Un-Delete Message
  • Press 8 To - Forward Message To Other User
  • Press 9 To - Save Message
