I am pleased to welcome you to the Web site of the Northern Michigan University Provost’s Office. As provost and chief academic officer of NMU, I am responsible for providing strategic vision, leadership and management for the Academic Affairs Division of the university, which includes the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Professional Studies and Business as well as Graduate and Continuing Education, Academic Information Services/Library, Student Services and Enrollment, International Programs, Institutional Research, the Beaumier Upper Peninsula Heritage Center and Broadcast and Audio-Visual Services. As provost, I also work closely with other divisions of the university such as Administration and Finance (e.g. the university budget and facilities planning) and University Advancement (e.g. fundraising and alumni) to ensure the close association of these divisions with academic programs and students.
In the Academic Affairs Division, we support NMU’s mission by encouraging excellence and innovation in teaching, research/scholarship, student development and community engagement, and we strive to prepare students for a lifetime of professional and community contributions in an increasingly interdependent and culturally diverse world. NMU’s faculty and staff includes outstanding teachers, scientists, writers, artists, musicians and experts in a variety of academic disciplines and technical fields, all of whom are enthusiastically committed to providing NMU’s undergraduate and graduate students with a top-quality education. We’re one of approximately 200 higher education institutions in the U.S. to have been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “community engaged” university and our Superior Edge student development program is nationally recognized for providing our students with outstanding opportunities to apply their learning in real world environments.
With the implementation of our new strategic plan, this is a great time to be a Wildcat! With the Roadmap as our guide, we’re investing in advancing innovation in all academic programs, in improving the lives of all members of our campus community, in leveraging opportunities provided by our magnificent location in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and in engaging educationally more and more with communities beyond our campus and around the world.
Please take the time to browse the Academic Affairs Division Web site and other NMU Web pages, and listen to comments made by our faculty, staff and students at an open campus forum to learn more about what NMU has to offer. You’ll find not only a broad array of interesting and engaging academic programs, services and opportunities, but also a sense of community and an engagement in learning that permeates our entire university.
Thank you for your interest in Northern Michigan University. I hope that you will not only browse our Web site, but come for a visit soon. We’d love to show you around!
Kerri Schuiling, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
