Lenette came to NMU from the Detroit area in the fall of 1981. As an undeclared student, she tried a couple of different disciplines before settling into social work, earning a bachelor social work in 1985. Lenette married NMU alumni Mark Pynnonen in 1984. She later went on to earn a master of social work from Wayne State and her teaching certificate from Aquinas College.

Lenette and Mark have 3 children—Shaun 20, Beth 25 and Jason 14. They reside in Negaunee. Prior to that, they lived in the Detroit area and also Grand Rapids. The last few years they were in Grand Rapids, they spent a lot of time trying to find a way to return to the Marquette area. Mark and Lenette own and operate Signs Now on Wright Street here in Marquette.

They are lifetime members of the NMU Alumni Association, Golden Wildcat Club, First Nighters Club and sponsor a Presidential Scholarship. She is proud of her affiliation with NMU and has seen the quality of the NMU education relative to other institutions.
