Student advising is an extremely important role that faculty play at Northern. When students are paired with a faculty member in their major, they meet an instant mentor with shared interests and the insider’s knowledge to guide them to their goal. Having common ground also helps open doors to communication that may involve sensitive personal or financial matters that are impacting a student’s academic performance or plans.

Advising also provides instructors a way to get to know their students and have a real hand in shaping not only their time at NMU, but their future as well.

Advising can sometimes also be confusing, frustrating and time-consuming. The tools, forms and information linked here should be helpful in addressing most advisers’ questions and needs. Please do not hesitate to contact the Academic Career and Advisement Center with your specific questions or concerns.
