Presentations

Amy Orf (Modern Languages and Literatures) presented "Responding to changing teacher certification standards at a small Midwestern university" at the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portguese annual conference July 9 in Washington, D.C. Orf explained how her department, because of its relatively small size, designed a single course for language education studentsregardless of the language studiedto meet revised standards and apply the concepts to their target language(s). Language education majors and minors now require a linguistics assessment. This includes phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, dialectology, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics and typology.

Russell Magnaghi (History), director of the Center for Upper Peninsula Studies, presented "Montreal: Gateway to Michigan" as part of the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center series on Canadians in the Upper Peninsula. Magnaghi focused on the fact that, especially during the colonial era, all goods, furs, voyageurs and finances traveled from Montreal to the Upper Peninsula. The city played an important role in the development of the state. But when international boundaries were set in place, this connection was seen as foreign and subsequently ignored.

Randall Jensen (HPER) attended the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports Conference June 27- July 1 in Porto, Portugal, with undergraduate students Paul Ewbank and Mitchell Stephenson. They presented five papers, which were also published in the Portuguese Journal of Sports Science: Volume 11, Supplement 2. Jensen coauthored all five. Other coauthors with NMU ties were students Sarah Leissring, Jodi Tervo and Erich Petushek, faculty Phil Watts (HPER) and David Donovan (Physics), alumnus William Ebben and former NMU visiting scholars Chris Richter and Eamonn Flanagan, from Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany) and the University of Limerick (Ireland), respectively. The papers presented were:

"Reliability of jump and performance measures in rugby union players," by R.L. Jensen, L.-A.M. Furlong, D. Graham and A.J. Harrison;

"Change in trunk muscle activity during incline treadmill running," by P.T. Ewbank and R.L. Jensen.

"Comparison of tibial impact accelerations: video vs accelerometer," by E.J. Petushek, C. Richter, D. Donovan, W.P. Ebben and R.L. Jensen.

"Onset and offset of rectus femoris activation during double poling ergometry in two positions: standing vs. sitting," by S.K. Leissring, R.L. Jensen, J.L. Tervo, and P.B. Watts.

"Contact time, jump height and reactive strength index during drop jumps in water, on padded and non-padded conditions," by M.L. Stephenson, W.P. Ebben, E.P. Flanagan and R.L. Jensen.
