Library Adopts Mobile Skin Technology

Olson Library’s catalog is now searchable from cell phones. In the latest customer service improvement, the library adopted “mobile skin” technology so search results can be delivered in a format compatible with small-screen devices.

“Quite a few libraries are offering this now,” said John Hambleton (AIS-Library). “Catering to mobile devices really started to pick up a few years ago because people recognized that they represent the future. Mobile devices are getting to be as powerful as desktop or laptop computers and are quite ubiquitous. It would be a mistake to ignore that.”

Mollie Freier (AIS-Library) adds that the portability of mobile devices makes the process more convenient: “Searching the catalog on your cell gives you the ability to just carry your cell phone upstairs with the call number of the book on it. You don’t need to write it down and you don’t need to carry your laptop upstairs.”

The catalog for cell phones equipped with Web browsers is available at NMU Mobile.
