Student Commencement Speaker, Soloists Named

NMU has selected a student speaker and two soloists for its mid-year commencement on Saturday, Dec. 12. Danielle Brandreth, an English writing major from Sterling Heights, will deliver the student address to NMU graduates. Music education majors Emily Strazzinski of Gwinn and Kurt Hauswirth of Kincheloe will serve as soloists at the ceremony.

Brandreth said she will talk about the transition from starting at NMU to getting involved in student organizations and activities and how the academic experience has developed students into special people and given them the “tools” to succeed, even in economic turmoil.

“When I first started, I wanted to go home,” she said. “But my parents encouraged me to stick it out.  It was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I have great friends.  I joined organizations like the Student Leader Fellowship Program, Superior Edge, Phi Sigma Sigma and Mortar Board. Through NMU, I’ve also had opportunities to study abroad. I spent two weeks in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, and took a travel writing course in Venice and Florence, Italy.”

Strazzinski and Hauswirth will lead the audience in The Star-Spangled Banner and Hail, Northern.

The commencement ceremony will be broadcast live on WNMU Public TV and via free streaming video through B2 Networks. It begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome.
