Pre-Med Students Benefit from NMU-MSU Program
NMU and Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine recently launched a partnership that will help both disadvantaged students and underserved areas of medicine. Dr. James Hillard of MSU is pictured at the Oct. 2 announcement in C.B. Hedgcock.
The Early Assurance Program provides a link between pre-medical students at NMU and MSU’s medical school. It enhances medical school admission opportunities for qualified pre-medical students who wish to practice in underserved areas, particularly rural locations. Full Story
Recent Grad in Austria on Fulbright Scholarship
Jameson Higgins is the third NMU student in five years to be selected for a Fulbright English language teaching assistantship in Austria. He is pictured with Carol Strauss (Modern Languages and Literatures), who encouraged him to apply and wrote a letter of recommendation.
Higgins was notified of his acceptance shortly before graduating in May. He is working as a language and cultural resource in three rural high schools in Styria, located in southeastern Austria. Full Story
Letts’ Work Featured in ArtPrize Competition
ArtPrize, an unprecedented competition that awarded more than $500,000 based on a public vote, was held Sept. 23-Oct. 10 in Grand Rapids. More than 1,260 worldwide artists participated, including Michael Letts (Art and Design). He displayed a series of four panels, including "Monument" at left, at DeVos Place. Full Story
New Faculty Hit the Road
One of the "Road Map to 2015" priorities is to orient new faculty to the assets, cultures and economies of the Upper Peninsula. The goal is to connect them with teaching and research opportunities that will promote community and regional involvement. With that in mind, new faculty from several departments participated in an on-the-road event Oct. 11 at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Full Story
