Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Joanne Shenandoah will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Kaufman Auditorium. The concert is the second in this year’s Northern Michigan University International Performing Arts Series.
Tickets are $6 for students, $15 for NMU faculty/staff and seniors over 60 and $20 for the general public. They are available at NMU EZ Ticket locations or online at www.nmu.edu/tickets.
A Wolf Clan member of the Iroquois Confederacy, Joanne Shenandoah has fulfilled the promise of her Native American name, Tekaliwah-kwa, or “She Sings.” She is an 11-time Native American Music award winner. Since emerging as an artist in 1990, Shenandoah has performed at such high-profile venues as Carnegie Hall, the White House, Kennedy Center, Earth Day on the Mall, Woodstock '94, Parliament of the World’s Religions in South Africa and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.
"She weaves you into a trance with her beautiful Iroquois chants and wraps her voice around you like a warm blanket on a cool winter's night," said Robbie Robertson, formerly of The Band, who used her voice on a solo album. Shenandoah has also collaborated and or performed with Bruce Cockburn, Neil Young, Brian Kirkpatrick, Willie Nelson, Rita Coolidge and others.
