Presentations
Neil Cumberlidge (Biology) presented "Evolution and Biogeography of the Freshwater Crabs" at the 2008 annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) in San Antonio, Texas. The invited presentation was co-authored with systematic biologist Dr. Peter K. L. Ng of the National University of Singapore. Cumberlidge was also an invited participant in the post-symposium workshop on "Decapod Phylogeny," organized as part of the Decapod Tree of Life project also held in San Antonio, Texas.
Kia Jane Richmond, along with Tom Hyslop (English), facilitated two "best practice" sessions for English teachers at the MARESA Fall Educators Conference. Richmond also gave a presentation entitled "Gestalt, Multiple Intelligences, and Responding to/Assessing Student Writing."
Seven NMU faculty and students from English, Education and Native American Studies attended the Michigan Council of Teachers of English fall conference. Grace Chaillier (Native American Studies) presented "Rewriting Family Memoir: Developing Short Exercises into Longer Narratives" and was a featured panelist in a session titled "Critical Conversations on Issues of Art, Writing, & Culture." Michael D. Martin (English) presented "Crossing the Bridge: 'Whiteness' and African American Literature," Kia Richmond (English) presented "Preparing and Inviting Teachers into Leadership and Scholarship."
