The "One Book, One Community" program will feature several October and November events related to this year's selection, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.
A free zumba Latin dance class for adults, along with a youth activity, are scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at the Marquette YMCA. The evening's activities will continue at 7 p.m. with a showing of the movie Carol's Journey at the Peter White Public Library. The film tells the story of a Spanish-American 12-year-old girl who is separated from her father, a pilot in the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, and leaves New York for her mother’s village in Spain in the turbulent spring of 1938. From Oct. 20-26, a “Cemetery of Not-to-Be-Forgotten Books” display will be set up on the NMU academic mall. November activities include a "Dinner by Artists" fundraiser for Oasis Gallery, with a Spanish theme, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Tickets are available at Snowbound Books. On Nov. 10, Spanish foods will be served by Capers Restaurant in the Landmark Inn at 6 p.m., followed by a "Books in Translation" presentation by Tim Compton (Modern Languages and Literatures) at 8 p.m.
