Student Employee Appreciation Week Under Way

National Student Employment Week (April 13-19) honors the contributions of student employees on campuses and reaffirms the value that such employment has on students’ overall university experiences. There are about 1,500 student employees at NMU. The top three areas on campus in terms of student hires are Dining Services, Housing and Residence Life and the PEIF.

Sandy Klaboe (Dining Services) is the student employment coordinator for her area. She also assists Housing and Residence Life and the University Center.

"Dining Services employs approximately 400 student employees among all of our facilities," Klaboe said. "Without our students, most of these facilities would not be operational. We have students who assist full-time staff members in all aspects of Dining Services. They assist in the preparation of the food, the serving of the food and with the clean-up aspect. With the number of students who eat on campus (both residents and commuters), our full-time staff would be unable to handle the volume without the assistance of our student employees.

"In addition, we employ students who have expertise in areas such as Web design, marketing, accounting, graphic design and others. Their knowledge and skills benefit Dining Services while providing them with excellent job experience to list on their resumes. We appreciate and value their hard work and dedication to our department."
