Achievements

Helen Kahn (Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences) received an honorable mention certificate from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's Claude Pepper Award Program. Kahn was nominated for her service to seniors in opening and sustaining the Upper Michigan Memory Diagnostic Center. The BC/BS Senior Advisory Council conference and Claude Pepper Award ceremony were held Sept. 14 in Mt. Pleasant.

Kia Jane Richmond (English) and graduate student Bobbi Nease attended the Investing In College Futures Learn and Serve Brighter Futures grantee meeting in Lansing on Sept. 7. This meeting allowed the attendees to collaborate with other Michigan Campus Compact Learn and Serve grant recipients and review program administration guidelines. Richmond was awarded an Investing in College Futures Learn and Serve Brighter Futures Grant for her program titled "Good Books for Everyone," in which her English 110 class will partner with youth from Teaching Family Homes.

The Telion chapter of Mortar Board received the Golden Torch Award for the 2006-07 academic year at the organization’s recent national conference. The NMU chapter was one of only 28 chapters selected for the honor. Stephanie Haupt, 2007-08 chapter vice president, attended the conference and accepted the award on behalf of the group. Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. The Telion chapter at NMU was established in 1979.
