Convocation Challenge: ‘Library of the Future’

 

In his fall convocation address Wednesday afternoon, NMU President Les Wong said the campus community this year must begin to confront one of the most complicated issues of his presidency: defining a “library of the future” for Northern.

 

“We have time before we’ll have funds to completely renovate the Edgar Harden Learning Resources Center (LRC),” Wong said. “But when we can, what should we do? What should our new library look like, what should it have in it and how can we build it so it remains a highly functional facility 20 years later?” Full Story

Pre-PA Students Gain Edge

NMU students now have an advantage in the highly competitive admissions process for Central Michigan University’s physician assistant program.

Director Dave Lucas (Physics) said a recent agreement guarantees NMU four interviews annually for pre-physician assistant students who meet the entrance requirements and are nominated by their adviser. Full Story

Sabbaticals Granted

Twelve NMU faculty members have been granted sabbatical leave for part or all of the 2007-08 academic year to focus on scholarly research and/or writing activities.

New Programs Debut

Several new academic programs are being offered at NMU.

Students can pursue associate degrees in radiography, respiratory therapy and surgical technology; a certificate in plastic injection technology; graduate-level certificates in criminal justice management, facilitated training and performance improvement; a post-master’s nursing educator certificate; a master’s degree in experimental psychology; and a bachelor’s degree in loss prevention management, which is NMU's first completely online baccalaureate program. For the first time, the Undergraduate Bulletin is available exclusively online.

Northern no longer produces and distributes print copies of the publication.

The new electronic edition is searchable by sections, courses and degrees. It can be viewed at Bulletin 2007-08.

FRT Season Announced

The 2007-08 “Drop Everything” season at Forest Roberts Theatre will feature four productions and an updated version of the annual holiday offering, Ebeneezer Scrooge. Full Story

Welcome Weekend Starts Thursday

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Welcome Weekend activities. The four-day event ushers in the fall semester and gives students an opportunity to get settled, take care of necessary business and – most importantly – have fun and meet people before classes begin. A red leather chair occupies a corner of Mary Pelton-Cooper’s office. Its shiny exterior disguises the extent of its comfort.

Occupants literally sink into the chair, which used to reside in Pelton-Cooper’s therapy office in the Counseling Center. Now it seats students and faculty in the Psychology Department. Full Story
