Distinguished Faculty Award Recipients Named

Mohey Mowafy (HPER), Laura Reissner (Education) and Kerri Schuiling (Nursing) are recipients of the 2007 Distinguished Faculty Award. They will be introduced to the NMU Board of Trustees and honored at spring commencement for their significant contributions to NMU and to their professional areas.

This marks the second Distinguished Faculty Award presented to Mowafy, who joined the NMU faculty in 1976. He also is a two-time recipient of the NMU Excellence in Teaching Award and was previously recognized for his academic leadership by Mortar Board and Rotary International. Mowafy specializes in nutrition, weight management and nutrition rehabilitation for eating disorders.

Reissner teaches undergraduate and graduate courses that focus primarily on special education and students with disabilities and emotional impairments. She is a member of the Michigan Special Education Institutions of Higher Education and served for three years as Northern’s coordinator of special education programs. Reissner was recognized by NMU with a Teaching, Learning and Communication (TLC) Faculty Award in 2004. She was hired in 1996.

In addition to her duties as associate dean and department head in the School of Nursing, Schuiling is a research consultant for the American College of Nurse Midwives. She is in her ninth year at NMU. Schuiling recently co-authored a textbook titled Women’s Gynecologic Health and collaborated with Oakland University to secure a $950,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth for a doctorate of nursing practice degree.
