Reorganizations Announced

 

Two areas in the finance and administration division – auxiliary services and human resources – will be    

reorganized, according to Mike Roy (Finance and Administration). Additionally, human resources and the controller’s office will relocate from Cohodas to other buildings on campus. Full Story

 

Provost Finalists' Campus Visits Set

Four provost candidates will participate in on-campus interviews beginning next week. They will meet with academic and administrative leaders. Candidates will also give a presentation at an open forum followed by a question-and-answer session at 4 p.m. on their respective interview dates. These will be made available via streaming audio after each session for those unable to attend.

The finalists (pictured left to right) are: Jeffrey Koep, dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Monday, Jan. 22; Dee Hopkins, dean of the College of Education at Texas A & M University in Corpus Christi, Friday, Jan. 26; Robert Sheehan, interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Toledo, Monday, Jan. 29; and Susan Koch, dean of the Graduate College and associate provost at the University of Northern Iowa, Wednesday, Jan. 31. First Wave of Faculty Hires Proceeding

Northern is in the process of hiring about 15 additional full-time-equated (FTE) teaching faculty for the 2007-08 academic year.

This is the first step in the action plan unveiled during the winter 2006 semester by President Les Wong. It calls for the university to add 60 FTE positions within five years, at an investment of up to $840,000 per year. Full Story

Enrollment Record Set

Northern has recorded all-time highs for both total headcount and undergraduate enrollment. The final fall-semester headcount was 9,689, up from 9,500 the previous year. The number of undergraduate students within that total was 8,880.

Paul Duby (Institutional Research) said it has been a “long, slow” recovery since enrollment bottomed out at about 7,600 after the closure of K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in 1995. Full Story

NMU Students Host Bowling Event

Ishpeming fifth- through eighth-grade students with various special needs hit the lanes before the holiday break for a group bowling activity that combined fun and camaraderie with an opportunity to learn valuable life skills. NMU seniors in an “orientation to special education class” organized the outing as their end-of-semester service learning project.

“They contacted local special education teachers about the possibility of holding a special field day just for kids with disabilities and secured a grant through the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency,” said Kathy Heikkila (Education), who teaches the course. “They were nervous, thinking it might be total chaos, but they had it organized so well that it went off perfectly.” Full Story

Internationalization Roundtable Jan. 25

 

Northern’s emphasis on internationalization served as the catalyst for an upcoming roundtable discussion titled “Defining Internationalization

in Higher Education: Concepts and Case Studies.” It will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, in the University Center Charcoal Room.

“Internationalization is a hard term to pin down,” said Carol Strauss (Modern Languages and Literatures), who organized the event on behalf of the Teaching and Learning Advisory Council. “Confusion understandably abounds because its meaning varies among institutions and also in different countries." Andy Poe (Mathematics and Computer Science), now in his eighth year at NMU, is living his dream job of being a college professor. It's something he wanted to do since he was a kid.
