David Boe (English) presented “Cartesian Linguistics Revisited” at the XVIIIth International Colloquium of the SGdS, a conference hosted by a European linguistics society and held at Leiden University in the Netherlands. The presentation revisited one of linguist Noam Chomsky’s works, which was published 40 years ago. Chomsky’s work made reference to Descartes and philosophical rationalism. Boe discussed Chomsky’s relevancy today. Boe teaches linguistics in NMU’s English department and serves as the secretary/newsletter editor of the North American Association for the History of Language Sciences.

 

Marek Haltof (English) presented a paper titled “After Kieślowski: Krzystof Kieślowski’s Legacy in Poland” at a conference about Polish studies in New York. The Polish Institute of Arts and Hunter College organized the conference. Krzystof Kieslowski was a contemporary Polish filmmaker in the 1990s. The presentation offered an overview of Kieślowski’s influence in Poland since his death in 1996. Haltof is a professor in the English department.
