Women's History Month Recognized

NMU is in the midst of Women's History Month, with a variety of activities planned through early April. This year's theme is “Women: Builders of Communities and Dreams.” The schedule of remaining events is as follows:

Mohey Mowafy (HPER) will present “Women and Eating Disorders: Thinness Obsession or Deadly Oppression?” at 6 p.m. Monday, March 20, in the Cadillac Room of the University Center.            

A student photo exhibit titled “Multiplicity” will be shown starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, in the C.B. Hedgcock atrium. The formal showing of the exhibit as well as a discussion about feminism will take place at 5 p.m.

New York Times best-selling author and motivational speaker Omar Tyree (pictured) will present “More than a Video Girl: Images of Minority Women in the Media” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, in the Michigan and Huron rooms. Tyree received a degree in print journalism from Howard University in 1991 and has been recognized as one of the most renowned contemporary writers in the African-American community. He founded his own publishing company, MARS Productions, before partnering with Simon & Schuster in 1995. Tyree has written 13 novels, including Flyy Girl and its sequel, For the Love of Money. The latter became a New York Times bestseller list and helped Tyree win the 2001 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literature in Fiction.            

AnnaMaria, a Santa Fe guitarist who holds a doctorate in theology with an emphasis on Latino studies, will speak and perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, in Jamrich Hall room 102. AnnaMaria recorded her first album at age 15, and has performed for the Prince of Spain. Before she was 25, she received her doctorate from Notre Dame University.            

The celebration will end with a night of Native American poetry at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in the Huron Room. Writers Heid Erdrich, Kim Blaeser, Marcie Rendon and Linda LeGarde Grover will read and discuss their various works.
