TV 13 Airs Weather Bulletins

WNMU-TV, Northern's public television station, now provides a service that allows owners of TVs with Secondary Audio Program (SAP) capability to receive emergency bulletins in the event of inclement weather.

People can tune their sets to channel 13 and access the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) broadcasts by turning on the SAP function on their audio menu. The service underwent testing last fall and is now fully operational.

The National Weather Service and Charter Communications provided the equipment, while NMU engineers apply their expertise to putting it into action. The infrastructure required to maintain the equipment, according to Eric Smith (Broadcast and Audiovisual Services), is mostly provided by funding from the state legislature and federal government.

“To be sure, it requires a continued investment, but if recent history is any indication, it is an investment that produces cost-effective, measurable results serving an important need,” Smith said. “Reason number 105 why NMU is important to Michigan.”
