Presentations

Six NMU faculty and staff attended the 5th Annual Lilly North Teaching and Learning Conference Sept. 15-18 in Traverse City. More than 250 instructors from all disciplines and types of academic institutions participated. NMU was one of the co-sponsoring universities for the conference.

Representing NMU were (seated left to right) Patricia Hogan (HPER), Dave Powers (Mathematics and Computer Science), and Mary Jane Tremethick (HPER). Shown standing are (from left) Kathy Saville (Instructional Technology), David Helton (Business) and Carol Steinhaus (Business). Helton said the conference "featured ample opportunities to interact personally with outstanding national speakers. Several presentations on research in the area of learning were particularly impressive because they shifted the emphasis away from teacher performance to student learning. After all, the main focus of the university should be upon the student."

Saville was honored for her work in helping to plan the conference each year. Faculty who gave presentations, and their respective topics, were as follows: Powers, "Online Testing"; Tremethick and Hogan, "Can You Picture It? Images and Teaching"; and Steinhaus, "Connecting Students: Using a Combined Discussion Board to Enable Upperclassmen to Help Freshmen.
