Williams Wins Gold at U.S. Championships

Junior Lindsay Williams finished ahead of U.S. Ski Team members and former Olympians to win the senior women's classic sprint at the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Soldier Hollow, Utah.

Coach Sten Fjeldheim (Athletics) said she became Northern's first female national champion in the sport with Saturday's gold-medal performance.

Williams told The U.S. Ski Team News that she had no preconceived plan for the final heat of the 1K race: "We were coming up to the first corner and it seemed like nobody wanted to lead going into the wind. ... I thought, 'Someone's going to have to go, so I might as well.' I just went out and said, 'If I'm going to be in front, I'm going to make it so they have to work really hard to draft off me. I don't want anyone to get a free ride.'"

Final berths on the 2005 World Championship Teams will be determined from the title races in Utah. The teams will be announced this week.
